Cervical Epidural Anesthesia

Abstract
Nowadays, because of many unwanted effects of inhalation anesthetics on vital organs during general anesthesia, neuroleptanesthesia or regional anesthesia such as epidural or spinal anesthesia has been widely used instead of inhalation anesthesia.
But in Korea, cervical epidural anesthesia, which is one type of epidural anesthetic methods, has not been well known as the good anesthetic method for the operations of upper half of human body except its use for pain control in the pain clinic.
Recently, according to the development of experimental and clinical studies concerning cervical epidural anesthesia in Japan, it has been extensively applied to the various operations of upper extremities, cervical and upper thoracic regions as the safe anesthetic method.
It is the purpose of this review to summarize the up-to-date knowledge pertaining to the influences of cervical epidural anesthesia on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, its clinical indications and complications on the basis of the author¢¥s experience of cervical epidural anesthesia during one-year sabbatical leave in Japan.
